The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.—Mark Twain
How to do we get to the place of peace we desire so much. There are those out there with endless lists and little booklets of life instructions. We have become a society of quick fixes, pills, drugs and self-help gurus. Nowadays no one wants to hear the reality.
Life is going to have challenges, big ones, small ones and change is going to come in some form at some stage. However unless you can magically transport yourself forward in time, you are going to have to walk through these changes. Goal-setting is a powerful technique that appears to work by providing a direction for our efforts, focusing our attention, and increasing confidence.
While goal-setting is an easy concept to understand, its application needs more thought and planning than most people realize. It’s always good to have a vision of what you want to achieve, but you also need a plan for how you are going to attain this goal and it’s also important to be specific and realistic about what you are striving to achieve. When it comes to setting goals, start off with what’s important to you in life. What do you want to do, how do you want to get from where you are now to where you want to be.
Learning from the past and letting it go frees a person to focus on doing their best in the present moment. But spending too much time imagining the future can prevent a person from taking action in the now. Setting a positive future intention is helpful, but breaking goals down into action steps makes the goal easier to achieve. Sometimes walking out the door and taking that first step is the hardest part and every achievement, great or small, has a first step and for many that first step can be the most difficult one to take, the task ahead can seem so hard make sure you know that the first step is the most important one. Breaking up a task into smaller steps makes achieving your goals easier. It’s the small steps and choices you make over time that eventually lead to achieving your dreams.
The theory of taking it one step at a time holds even truer for toughest situations in our lives. It’s hard, but no one promised that life would be easy. Who we are is defined by the actions we take and by choosing action…you are making the decision to be extraordinary.
Our success in life is the addition of small steps taken over time. Which step forward are you taking today?
