This month we are focusing on Spirit Guides – people always seem to ask questions about their guides, who they are etc. Here are some of your most frequently asked questions, answered….
What is a Spirit Guide?
A spirit guide is a soul who is on a higher vibration, who has agreed to walk your life-path with you in this incarnation, lovingly guiding and helping you through the difficulties of your present incarnation. They are not there to tell us what to do or to solve all our problems – they merely guide us, as a loving parent would.
Everyone has a spirit guide, with no exception. Even if you don’t believe in spirit you will still have a guide. My guide says that he learns from me too – it’s a two way street. We made a contract before I incarnated that we would stick together, and that’s how it works.
Why are they with us and how do they choose us?
They are with us to help us with our life plan and purpose. Before we incarnate, our higher selves decide which lessons we need to learn, after reviewing our previous lives. We then either make an agreement with someone we owe karma to, someone who owes karma to us, or a master teacher.
What types of guides are there?
This is the guide that everyone has – the one you are born with, who is almost another part of your personality. Full of unconditional love, your spirit guide will never ask you to do anything wrong, or that you don’t agree with, and will never, ever judge you or hurt you. He made a contract with you before you came back to earth and he will meet you on the other side when you pass back into spirit. He will never leave you or let you down.
These are guides often found by people who do energy work, such as Reiki. A ascended master who appears as a spirit guide is often a being that led a physical life and has moved on to a higher spiritual plane—for example, Buddha, Krishna, even Jesus. Ascended masters usually work with collective groups of souls—in other words, if you’ve got an ascended master hanging around you, you’re not the only one he or she is helping. Their primary focus is that of helping all of humanity. It’s not uncommon for an ascended master to have access to Akashic records. Also referred to as Master Teacher guides.
An ancestral guide is one who can claim some sort of kinship with you, such as your dear Aunt Tillie who died when you were ten. It may also appear in the form of a long-dead ancestor. In some schools of thought, these entities are seen as reincarnated guides, because they are the spirits of someone who loved us during their physical lifetime, or who had some sort of blood connection to our family. Some people, depending on their religious upbringing, may see these types of guides as guardian angels.
Common Spirit Guide, or Teacher Guide:
A typical spirit guide is archetypical, symbolic or representative of something else. For example, you may find your guide appears in the form of a warrior, a storyteller, or a wise woman, and they have appeared to you for a purpose. Typically, that purpose is to teach you and guide you along a particular path. They may also introduce you to other archetypes along your journey, and help out with problem solving, based upon your needs. They are known to provide insight by way of dreams or meditation, and may only hang around as long as you need them, then move on. They are the “specialists” of the guide world.
Some people have what’s known as a “doorkeeper” – a spirit guide who is assigned to protect. Like an ethereal bouncer, they stand on the door only allowing good energy through! They usually show themselves as large and quite foreboding – to scare away the bad guys !
Although many people claim to have animals as spirit guides, often these entities are more companions than anything else. It’s not uncommon for a deceased pet to linger around, keeping you company through the grieving process. In some spiritual traditions, such as various Native American or shamanic paths, a person may have an animal totem, which provides teaching and/or protection.
Everyone is also assigned their own person Angel – although they are not truly guides. Angels tend to work on a higher vibration but they do frequently get involved in our daily lives. I would say they are a type of guide but not a guide in it’s true sense.
How can I meet my Guide?
It’s a really boring answer, but meditation is the key. Meditation allows your vibration (or wave-length) to rise – which means you are then able to tune into your guide more easily.
If you can meditate once a week for 15 minutes or so, with the intention of connecting to your guide, then things should begin to move forward. You can ask your guide for a name, or to do things like find you a parking space. Over time you will begin to ‘hear’ your guide’s responses. They will not always be in a physical “voice” – sometimes they are just a thought. People always ask me “how do I know this wasn’t one of my own thoughts?” and the answer is, you don’t – at first. You just have to trust your instincts. The more you allow the idea of your guide to be real, the more real it will become.
