A certainty for all smokers is that you will stop when you want to, anyone that thinks different is completely wrong. As a Hypnotherapist if someone comes to me to stop smoking and I don’t believe that they are seeing me for themselves, then I won’t treat them. I’ve had several occasions where smokers have come to me and said my wife or husband wants me to stop smoking and I’m not sure if I want to stop, I tell them to come back and see me when they want too.
The number one rule of quitting is that the smoker has to want to; if you’ve been down the road of thinking you want to quit but for some reason have started again that’s not a problem because deep down inside you want to quit.
My biggest issue with a lot of health organisations that say you should stop is that the majority of them only deal with the Nicotine addiction. They’ll give you patches, gum and plastic bits to smoke on, but what about the other side of a smoker, not the side that needs the nicotine but the side that says, in the morning I have a coffee and a ciggie, mid morning at work I have a ciggie break, driving home from work I have a ciggie in the car, I think you get the picture.
The addiction of Nicotine is a serious issue I agree, but as an Ex smoker myself for over 20 years and being in the position I am, I see this weekly. Clients come to me and say that they have to smoke when and state as before, driving, tea break, after eating food etc….
Hypnotherapists can change behavioural patterns and mind sets and smokers are no different, you have to find out the key motivation to stop smoking is it Health, Financial, energy, prevent early ageing, whiter teeth, lower stress levels, improve taste and smell or for the sake of your family, and having the knowledge that you will be around longer to see the grand children grow up and have fun with them.

My advice and help for you.
The are several ways to stop smoking depending on how much you want it, First of all do a bit of soul searching and find out the reason, your reason to stop smoking this is KEY to you being successful. Start to imagine life as a non smoker, will you take up more exercise, will you buy fresh new smelling clothes that not only don’t smell of ciggies but also enable you to buy clothes with your cash, will you save up for that holiday to a part of the world that you’ve always dreamed of but never been able to afford. You really need to look at this as an opportunity, a dream, and a fresh start in life. Wipe the slate clean and start to think positive about the future and how much longer you will live for.
Identify how you’re going to stop smoking, are you going to find a reputable Hypnotherapist (I know a good one, wink.) or are you going to your GP or maybe a group to help you quit. There are plenty of options and lots of help out there.
I’m not going to teach you to suck eggs, you know as an adult the implications and dangers of smoking, if you feel you really want to stop and you want to do it the cold turkey route I’m going to give you some hints and tips, these are some of the methods I used on myself.
I want you to think of the most disgusting thing that you could ever put in your mouth (don’t be rude.) I used an ash tray with cigarette ends and stale beer and soapy dish water with old cigarette ash. So think about your worst thing that you could ever have in your mouth. Now I want you to create that image, smell and taste and keep it in your mind to the point that you feel sick, now intensify it make it bigger, brighter, and larger. Now light up a cigarette and start to smoke it. With your eyes closed keep making the disgusting taste, smell and image stronger so that with each drag you immediately taste and smell the thought more, make it stronger and intensify it. Now do this every time you smoke so that you instantly associate cigarettes with that horrible taste, image and smell. If you do it enough this will soon help you reduce dramatically your smoking habit.
Breaking the cycle
This is the will power part, when you “usually” have a cigarette change your pattern of behaviour, if you smoke after dinner change it and go and do a crossword or talk to someone or send a text to a loved one and say, I’ve eaten and not smoked. Just start to break your own cycle of behaviour, it’s not hard to do and you can make it fun. Once you’ve done it a few times it will become easier. This is the biggest part of quitting smoking, nail this and you will be successful.
Start to call your self a non smoker, you’re not an ex smoker, you’re a non smoker believe me it makes a massive difference psychologically. You will notice after a while you will be proud to be a non smoker and will notice how much a smoker does smell, believe me that is the biggest thing that I’ve noticed. When a smoker walks in the room, it is horrible. I always thought I covered it up with aftershave or mouth wash but you don’t it’s there and follows you around after you’ve stopped for two days you will notice the difference.
